Choosing a Preschool
What to Look For When Choosing a Preschool? A Visit Checklist

School tours usually show the tidiest classrooms and the most prepared moments. This checklist is designed to help you pick up clues about a school's everyday reality even during a short visit.
What should you observe during a visit?
Observation comes before questions. Watching quietly for a few minutes after entering a classroom often answers many questions on its own.
- Do teachers speak to children at eye level?
- Can children access materials freely?
- Are the walls filled with ready-made templates, or with children's own work?
- What is the noise level and overall atmosphere like: tense or lively?
- Are the toilets and sinks child-sized and clean?
Teacher-to-child ratio and staff continuity
Class size and the number of adults in the classroom directly determine the quality of care, especially for younger age groups. Ask not only about the ratio but also how long the teachers have worked at the school.
High staff turnover makes it harder for children to build a sense of trust. The question "How many of last year's teachers are still here this year?" says a great deal about institutional culture.
Safety criteria
Safety is a fundamental topic that families are sometimes hesitant to ask about. It is a family's right to expect clear, ready answers on the following points.
- How is entry and exit controlled, and who is permitted to collect the child?
- Is there an emergency and evacuation plan, and are drills conducted?
- How many staff members have received first-aid training?
- Are the garden and play area surfaces and equipment regularly inspected?
- Is there an accompanying staff member on shuttle vehicles?
Daily routine and rest
Ask for a sample daily schedule. The balance between free play, outdoor time, group activities, and rest is a concrete indicator of how the school views childhood.
Communication with families
How is daily information shared? How often are parent meetings held? Who do you contact if a problem arises? The style of communication shapes much of the experience you will have throughout the school year.
What to watch for in the contract
Ask to take the contract home and read it before signing. Make sure fee increases, refund conditions, absence and illness policies, and additional services are clearly stated in writing. For a price comparison, you can use the list of items in our choosing a preschool in İstanbul guide.
Frequently asked questions
Should I bring my child to the visit?
A practical approach is to make the first visit alone to ask questions freely, then visit the shortlisted schools together with your child.
How do I find out if a school is registered with the Ministry of National Education (MEB)?
You can ask the institution for its operating licence and affiliated authority, and confirm this through the relevant provincial directorate of national education.
