Age 3 is when many children encounter school for the first time. A burst in language, imagination-based play, and the urge to say "I'll do it myself" are the defining traits of this period. A good classroom for 3-year-olds is designed to channel this energy.

Why is age 3 a commonly preferred starting point?

By this age, most children have mastered toilet skills and can express their basic needs verbally. The desire to build play together with peers also becomes more pronounced, making it easier to benefit from a group setting.

The role of play

In a 3-year-old program, free play is expected to take up a significant part of the day. Pretend play, blocks, sand-and-water play and art corners are areas where language, motor and social skills develop together. A program dominated by desk-based activities may be premature for this age.

Language development and communication

How the teacher talks with the children, how they expand on questions, and how story time is conducted are decisive for language development. If you are considering a foreign language, take a look at our bilingual preschool guide.

Mixed-age or single-age classroom?

Single-age classrooms bring together children who are developmentally similar. In mixed-age classrooms, younger children model themselves on older ones, while older children develop a sense of responsibility. Both structures have their strengths; what matters is how the teacher manages the different levels.

Settling-in process and separation

Separation anxiety can still be seen at age 3. Short and consistent goodbyes, bringing an object from home, and meeting the teacher beforehand can ease the transition. If anxiety persists, ask about the school's guidance support: psychologist at preschool.
